Whether it is in school or college, the mall or at home, we all have fallen down the stairs sometime or the other in our lives.
But two things commonly occur when someone falls down the stairs - at least one person is hurt and at least one witness laughs over it and makes it a joke the next day at college.

Yes, the other day when i visited a mall, a group of teenagers, who finished their shopping, were getting down a long polished-marble staircase with around forty steps.
On their way down, they were holding few plastic bags, cracking jokes, laughing out loud and worst of it, few of them placed their hands upon each other's shoulders and others got down with tightly clasped hands.
On their way down, they were holding few plastic bags, cracking jokes, laughing out loud and worst of it, few of them placed their hands upon each other's shoulders and others got down with tightly clasped hands.
Suddenly, one person couldn't land his leg properly and slipped. As it is a fully polished marble stairway, the slip was enough to accelerate his fall. On his way down, he dragged down his immediate partner and within seconds, the whole group stumbled over the stairs. Thud sounds were followed by sounds like ahh, ouch.The people who were around helped them to get up and as I was nearby, I could manage to help two of them. One among them was unable to walk, his face became red. He was saying that he landed right on his bum and was unable to bear the pain.
When all this happened, I have noticed that few couples, who were standing in the balcony, watched it from above and were having a nice laugh over it. One man's pain is another man's gain?
Never run down or up stairs, if you are in a hurry, better take an elevator. When you are in a group, better don’t hold others hands while taking stairs, because if you fall, you tend to drag another one along with you.
There is even a weird phobia of falling down stairs called “Bathmophobia” - an abnormal and persistent fear of stairs or steep slopes. Those who suffer from such a phobia better hang on to the banister and move.
Falling on stairs is not a joke, it can lead to a stiff neck, a broken wrist or leg or can even be fatal if you hurt your head; so please be careful. While you are taking stairs, do take the help of the banister.

Hello Sai, I read your blog in a hurry this morning before going out and was laughing like anything. Because I remembered a similar incident:
Long back, you can say, when I was young, I and my sister went somewhere by bus. The back seat (last long seat) was empty and both of us sat there in the middle and were chatting as usual. No one was standing in the bus. Suddenly the driver pressed the brake and my sister did not have anything to hold onto, because she was sitting in the middle seat, just dropped down and glided to the middle of the bus. It took sometime for us to realise what happened and started laughing. She was laughing in the middle of the bus on the floor and I was sitting on the seat and laughing. I came back to my senses after sometime and went and helped her.
Thanks for the laughs!
Thanks Sandhyaji for your comment, glad this post made you laugh.
Well, the moving bus incident you mentioned here is really funny.
Yes, considering India's traffic conditions, while travelling by city bus, we tend to lose our control when the driver applies sudden brakes.
But in most cases, our head hits the seat before.
ya it's a common scene.but boss i think they dont mean it when they laugh..if the fall is heavy they dont laugh...anwy if they think it is funny letthem laugh..their chance would come too..what say?
Hi Charan
Hi Charan,
Yes, sadly: "One man's pain is another man's gain"
I think we've all witnessed other people's misfortunate falls during our lives.
At first sight we might not realize how serious it can be and human's first reaction is to laugh. But I think most of us would run to help a person in need.
Good piece. So true. When will we stop laughing at adversity of others ? Or is it something we can't help ?
@Ramesh:
I agree that people tend to laugh but yes, as you said, they never mean it and will always intend to lend a helping hand.
Thanks for your style of nice and crisp piece of a comment.
@Margaret:
Yes, you said it right. When we witness sudden unexpected events, first we laugh but within seconds we realize the pain and extend our hands to help the victims.
Thanks a lot for your opinion on the topic.
@Onkar:
I feel that laughing, as a first reaction, is something which we can’t avoid because it got so deeply rooted into our psychology that we tend to follow it.
Thanks a lot for your comment, onkarji.
To all the Readers:
It looks as if we are bound to enjoy such incidents. Human psychology is tuned in such a way that if not a laugh, at least a smile is compulsory :)
For Example:
When a person, who is in a hurry to finish his work, unnoticingly sits on a chair with a broken leg and falls with a big thud.
The entire room will burst into uproarious laughter and they gaspingly tell it to those sitting in the next room and it becomes a big joke by the end of the day in the office :)
But when all the drama ends, one or two would enquire his well being and offer him some pain-relieving ointment :)
When we laugh at another's follies, we do not mean ill but are just trying lighten their hurt.
It is however important to learn from other's falls be they on a staircase or in life. We must learn to hold the bannister wherever it is available.
As you said, first we laugh without thinking of the aftermath and realise the mistake if we see the person is hurt and help them definitely. All of us who know the episode of my sister, laugh thinking about it but we never sit in the middle of the last long seat in the bus when it is empty. We don't have anything to hold on to.
All of us laughed but learnt a lesson too. Thank you, Sai.
Im a professional fall-downer, toe-banger, elbow-knocker and tripper-slipper. :S GAHH
@Soul Searcher: Thanks a lot for your opinion on the topic. Yes, it's important to learn from other's falls.
@Sandhyaji: Thanks for revisiting this post and leaving another nice comment.
@Serendipity: Hi buddy, thanks for passing by and for your comment. Better be careful the next time you take the stairs :)
